Hypstrz performs in The Current studios

The Hypstrz were considered one of the purveyors of cool in the Twin Cities during the late '70s and early '80s, helping to pave the way for some of our most beloved bands like The Suicide Commandos and The Suburbs. Hypstrz had a different niche though: reworking '60s classics into an idiosyncratic, full-out garage rock and punk experiment. And while they didn't immediately get the attention they deserved, the band has now gone down in the history books of Minnesota music.

142. The Power of Words

Works for voice and chamber ensemble, and string quartet, performed by Rebel Baroque Orchestra with Derek Lee Ragin, countertenor, and the Borromeo String Quartet.

Porpora: “Alto Giove” from Polifemo

Handel: “Rompo i lacci” from Flavio

Beethoven: String Quartet No. 16 in F Major, Op. 135, No. 16

For any composer of vocal music, the text is an important and often driving force in determining musical content and structure. We begin this episode with two early examples from opera, Porpora’s gorgeous “Alto Giove” from his opera Polifemo—a beautiful prayer of thanks to Jove—and Handel’s fiery and melismatic “Rompo i lacci” from Flavio. Beethoven’s use of text is subtler, but just as important in his final string quartet, opus 135, number 16. At the beginning of the final movement, Beethoven scrawls a fateful-sounding title across the manuscript: “The Difficult Decision.” Alongside the beginning chords, he poses a question: “Must it be?” The quartet chews over the question for a while in the introduction until, all of a sudden, the key changes to F Major and Beethoven gives us his answer: “Yes, it must!” Historians and musicologists have batted around many theories as to what Beethoven meant by this ambiguous question and answer.

Touring behind their ambitious effort, the group -- Cecil Otter, Dessa, Lazerbeak, Mike Mictlan, Paper Tiger, P.O.S. and Sims -- has become one of the most exciting, high-energy live acts around.

"There's not like a storied tradition of hip-hop in Minnesota, so you don't have to sound a specific way. There are great hip-hop artists who came out before us and definitely paved the way of how to do this independently and how to create your own sound, and I think we kind of took the mold that they set out and kind of carved our own niche and did it the way we did it." -- Sims
No Cover: Hermeto Pascoal

pMulti-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal, at 74-years young, is a legendary and wildly experimental jazz musician beloved throughout his native Brazil. He recently played Lincoln Center Out Of Doors./p pspan style="text-decoration: underline;"strongBefore You Press Play:/strong/span/p
pstrongHometown: /strongCuritiba, Paraná, Brazil/p
pstrongThe Facts: /strongRaised in Lagoa da Canoa, Alagoas, in Brazil’s rugged northeast, Hermeto Pascoal had no formal schooling, electricity or radio for the first 14 years of his life. Despite these supposed deprivations, he learned to play music from listening to nature and subsequently began to make homemade instruments such as "pumpkin flutes." In larger Brazilian cities—Recife, Rio and São Paolo—Pascoal began to hone his musical chops on accordion, piano, flute and other instruments. He performed with the groups the Fafá Lemos Band, Quarteto Novo and Mundo Verde Esperança, among others./p
pIn the late '60s, Pascoal met Miles Davis, and impressed the American trumpeter and bandleader so much that he recorded two songs with him, “Nem Um Talvez” (“Not Even a Maybe”) and “Igrejinha” (“Little Church”), which appeared on Davis’s emLive/Evil/em album. He has also worked closely with Ron Carter, Sergio Mendes and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Pascoal's long list of classic recordings include the 1977 “Slaves Mass,” the 1980 Cérebro Magnético (Magnetic Brain) and the 1986 “Brasiz Universo” (Brazil Universe). In 1999, he published a href="http://www.hermetopascoal.com.br/partituras_calendario.asp" target="_blank"Calendario Do Som/a (Calendar of Sounds), which offers up a song a day; Pascoal composed one song a day for an entire year between 1996 and 1997. His tunes have been covered by such luminaries as Gil Evans and John McLaughlin./p
pstrongThe Sound:/strong Hermeto Pascoal is so determinedly experimental in his approach to jazz that he could make music out of a tea kettle. On a recent beautiful summer evening at Lincoln Center Out of Doors, O Bruxo (the Sorcerer) did just that, by transforming that well-known kitchen staple into a veritable kazoo. Wooden cups, pans, an animal’s horn, the human body (which was used for percussion) and a half a dozen other things received similar alchemic applications. The Hermeto Pascoal e Grupo septet includes his wife Aline Moreno (who scatted wildly throughout), his son Fabio Pascoal, as well as Itibere Zwang, Andre Marques, Vinicius Dorin, and Marcio Bahia. Whimsical, hip-shaking, dissonant or dirge-like, Pascoal and company consistently keep the music dynamic and on edge./p
pstrongLatest Release: em /em/strongemBodas de Latão/em, Tratore (2010)/p
pstrongHe Said, She Said:/strongem /em“Brazilian jazz” hardly sums up Mr. Pascoal’s music. His compositions are full of demanding, musicianly convolutions: leaping melodies, meter shifts, mutating chromatic harmonies and dissonances. Aline Morena, his wife, scat-sang along with Vinicius Dorin’s soprano saxophone at such breakneck speed, and in such long and twisty phrases, that even a listener could feel breathless."—Jon Pareles, emNew York Times/em, August, 2010/p
p"It is difficult to overstate the excitement I felt upon hearing and seeing this "wild albino" (a term used by Miles Davis) and marveling over his astounding originality. After this wild incursion, Pascoal disappeared into his mystical existence unperturbed by his virtual anonymity and continually inspired to pursue his quest for musical idiosyncrasy."—Nick Catalano, emAll About Jazz/em, November, 2004/p
pstrongWe didn't get the set list for the show, but did you? Please let us know what songs were played at the Hermeto Pascoal Lincoln Center show by leaving us a comment below. Plus, check out this clip from the performance./strong/p
